Hesychasm

Hesychasm
   Hesychia ("quietude," or "tranquility" in Greek), a time-honored goal of solitary monks, became the basis of a 14th-century movement that was introduced to Mount Athos by Gregory of Sinai (qq.v.). Hesychast monks sought to achieve mystical communion with God by repeating over and over again the prayer "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." Breathing was regulated and various physical postures were assumed to aid this process. When Barlaam of Calabria (q.v.) ridiculed the Hesychasts, a controversy ensued in 1336 that pitted him against Gregory Palamas (q.v.), the great defender of Hesychasm. Barlaam was condemned in 1341, but the controversy resurfaced in the social civil warof 1341-1347.
